Are you dreaming of a Greek island getaway but can't decide between the ever-popular Santorini and the lesser-known Crete? Crete is the hidden gem you've been looking for. With its rich history, mouthwatering cuisine, and unparalleled natural beauty, Crete offers a truly authentic Greek experience that sets it apart from the tourist-packed streets of Santorini.

How do I get there?

Getting to Crete is a breeze. The island is home to two international airports, Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ), with regular flights from major European cities. If you're coming from further afield, you can easily connect through Athens. The moment you step off the plane, you'll be greeted by the warm Mediterranean sun and the scent of wild herbs carried on the sea breeze.

When to visit?

Now, let's talk about the best time to visit. While Santorini is known for its shoulder-to-shoulder crowds in peak summer, Crete remains a peaceful oasis. May to June and September to October offer the perfect combination of mild weather, fewer tourists, and lower prices. You'll have the beaches and ancient ruins practically to yourself!

What to do?

Speaking of ancient ruins, Crete is a history buff's paradise. The island is home to the oldest city in Europe, Knossos, where you can explore the sprawling Minoan palace and immerse yourself in tales of mythical minotaurs and labyrinthine corridors. But that's just the beginning. From the Venetian fortresses of Rethymno to the Ottoman mosques of Chania, Crete's historical tapestry is as vibrant as it is diverse.

No vacation is complete without indulging in the culinary delights of the island and Crete is no exception. Forget the generic Greek salads and moussaka you'll find in Santorini's tourist traps. In Crete, you'll feast on dishes like kalitsounia (sweet cheese pastries), dakos (barley rusks topped with tomatoes and feta), and if you're feeling really adventuros their famous snails boubouristi.

But what truly sets Crete apart is its stunning natural beauty. While Santorini's iconic white-washed buildings and blue domes are undeniably picturesque, Crete's landscapes are the stuff of legends. Picture yourself hiking through the rugged Samaria Gorge, the longest in Europe, or lounging on the pink sands of Elafonissi beach. And if you're feeling adventurous, hop on a boat to the uninhabited island of Chrysi, where you can snorkel in crystal-clear waters and spot the rare Caretta sea turtles.

How to get around?

Getting around Crete is easy, with a reliable bus network connecting the major cities and towns. Rent a car and you'll have the freedom to explore hidden villages, secluded coves, and off-the-beaten-path tavernas where you'll rub elbows with friendly locals. And if you're looking for a day trip, the charming town of Agios Nikolaos, with its bottomless lake and chic cafes, is just a short drive away.
