Our don't go here, go here series shines a light on some of the world’s lesser known destinations and help you off the beaten track.

Where Amsterdam boasts a bustling atmosphere with vibrant nightlife and iconic attractions, Haarlem offers a more intimate and charming experience.

With a population of about 160,000 compared to over 850,000 in Amsterdam, Haarlem can feel like a quieter, more quaint Dutch city without the crowds and chaos.

How do I get there?

Haarlem is just 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam Central Station, or 30 minutes direct from Schiphol airport, making it a breeze to reach if you fly in to the Netherlands min airport

When to visit?

With its historic architecture, cultural treasures, and relaxed pace, Haarlem captivates visitors with its picturesque streets and inviting ambiance. Spring can be the perfect time to visit with the city's tulip and other flowers in bloom, and you can take in the Haarlem Lenten Fair in late March as well, while in Autumn you can enjoy the Park Festivals in Haarlemmerhout.

Haarlem is bursting with historic charm as it dates back to the 13th century.  There's plenty of well-preserved medieval architecture, canals, courtyards, and windmills to explore all year round.

What to do?

Excellent food and drink scene. Haarlem boasts a fantastic range of local breweries, ambient cafes, and top-notch restaurants without the inflated Amsterdam prices. If you're a foodie this is the place to be, especially if you're after traditional Dutch cuisine like Stamppot (mashed potatoes with vegetables), bitterballen (meat croquettes) and local produce - cheese, beer and bread are their specialities.

There's also plenty of great day trips you can enjoy with Haarlem as a more affordable base - head out to see the tulip fields, windmills of Zaanse Schans, or even a quick train ride to Amsterdam itself.

How to get around?

Compared to Amsterdam, Haarlem is a much smaller city, making it easier to get around on foot without having to plan bus or tram routes. The historic centre is very compact and walkable allowing you to travel on foot between Grote Markt, Grote Lerk, and Teylers Museum, allowing you to experience an authentic Dutch town without the overload of tourists.

You can also, of course hire a bike in the city center to explore different neighbourhood for an authentic Netherlands experience.
