As the song goes ‘Autumn in New York, why does it seem so inviting?’ Well, we blame Meg Ryan for that. As soon as the leaves start to turn and the weather drops a couple degrees, it’s time for a When Harry Met Sally and You’ve Got Mail double-bill. We don’t make the rules. Fall makes the rules.

 

Our ears prick at the sound of the first leaf hitting the ground. It’s time to grab your coziest sweater, dye your hair auburn and pretend to start liking Pumpkin Spiced Lattes again. Watch the famous pumpkin flotilla in Central Park

The perfect family-friendly activity to do in Central Park this year is free and BYOP (bring your own pumpkin). Pop along with a carved pumpkin, then make your way to the edge of the Harlem Meer (exploring the other free spooky activities along the way) before seeing a whole bunch of jack-o-lanterns float past.

Experience Fall-o-ween at the New York Botanical Gardens 

There’s no better place to see the fall foliage than in the New York Botanical Gardens. Through the changing seasons they host different events, and this season sees the return of their Fall-o-ween! With a huge variety of day or night events (for all different ages), there’s sure to be something that floats your spooky boat during your NYC fall visit.

Take part in a Halloween parade

The Village Halloween Parade starts at Canal Street and travels along 6th Avenue to 15th Street. With giant puppets, incredible costumes, dancers and loads of other things going on, whether you’re taking part, or watching - it’ll be magical either way!

Taste your way though fall at a Farmers Market 

What better way to experience fall at its finest than through your taste buds? New York City hosts incredible farmers markets offering up the best local, seasonal produce. Union Square Greenmarket is an excellent one to visit but be sure to check out other local ones near you!

 

Get the popcorn out at a free outdoor movie

There may be a bit of a chill in the air but there’s still time to grab an outdoor movie. Hudson Yards have a timetable of excellent movies that you can go along and see for free during October. And if you’re the type to dose off during a film then bringing your Trtl Pillow along will provide the perfect outdoor movie nap experience. 

 

Explore Queens County Farm Museum

Queens County Farm Museum is a 47 -acre farm that’s provided local produce for over 300 years - and fall harvest season is the perfect time to visit! Take a bus or rent a car to the farm and soon you’ll be picking pumpkins, feeding the animals or just getting lost in the Amazing Maize Maze (there’s even a Moonlight Maze Challenge if daylight is too easy.)

 

Make the most of Oktoberfest 

Just because you’re not in Munich it doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the delights of Oktoberfest. New York City hosts some of the best Oktoberfest events outside of Germany. Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn is not just your average graveyard. Host to stunning gothic architecture, famous headstones and gorgeous views, Green-Wood is also home to centuries old trees and over 500 varieties of plants. With events from concerts in the catacombs to bird-watching, this is the place to be during the spooky season. 

Hunt for the perfect sunset 

Finish off your perfect fall day by hunting for the golden sunset that only appears around this time of year. Take a ferry tour around the Statue of Liberty, wander over the Brooklyn Bridge or walk along The High Line. Take a moment to appreciate where you are and that, during the fall, there’s nowhere better to be.
