Post-Pandemic Price Surge: The Cost of Global Tourist Attractions
By
Shanelle Miller
After years of canceled trips and changing restrictions, travelers are making the most of their vacations. But if you’ve recently booked tickets to major attractions and felt a pinch in your wallet, you’re not imagining things.
According to data from Skift, admission fees for global tourist attractions rose by an average of 18% between June 2019 - June 2023, with many popular landmarks increasing their prices even further in 2025.
But which spots are the priciest to visit? We’ve analyzed ticket prices from a list of iconic global attractions and ranked the ten that have seen the biggest price jump. Matt Parrish, COO at Trtl Travel, will also share their expert tips and tricks to help you make the most of your vacation.
Methodology
To uncover the most expensive tourist attractions in 2025 compared to pre-pandemic levels, we compiled a seed list of world-famous landmarks and pulled standard adult ticket prices from 2019 using TicketLens. We then compared this with 2025 ticket prices currently listed on each attraction’s official site.
Prices were then converted into both USD and GBP, where relevant, to reflect global travel spending. The percentage increase for each attraction was calculated to reveal which destination saw the steepest surge in cost.
Why have tourist attractions seen a price increase post-pandemic?
It's no secret that travel has come roaring back since the pandemic, but that rise in demand hasn’t come without its costs, quite literally.
“After years of restrictions and postponed getaways, people are more eager than ever to explore the world again,” says Matt. “That surge in demand, paired with inflation and rising operational costs, has pushed prices up across the board, especially at big-name attractions.”
But it’s not just pent-up wanderlust and inflation driving the price hikes; a number of trends are playing their part:
1. Social media influence
Apps like Instagram and TikTok have turned landmarks into viral sensations. “It only takes one video to blow up, and suddenly everyone wants to recreate the moment,” says Matt.
That ‘bucket list’ effect is seeing crowds flock to the world’s most iconic spots, pushing demand — and prices — even higher.
2. Experience-first level
“There’s been a clear shift from material purchases to memory-making,” explains Matt. “People are prioritizing unique, meaningful experiences, even if that means paying a bit more.”
From immersive exhibitions to rooftop views and behind-the-scenes tours, attractions are now offering more ways to engage, at a premium.
3. More affordable travel options
Budget airlines, flexible accommodation, and digital nomad lifestyles have made travel more accessible than ever. With more people able to hop on a plane or take a staycation, attractions are seeing a bigger visitor number year-round.
4. Investment and upgrades
In some cases, the rise in prices reflects upgrades to the attractions themselves. “We’ve seen big investments in infrastructure, digital experiences, and premium ticket options — especially since COVID changed how we move through crowded spaces,” says Matt.
Whether it’s a long-haul adventure or a local day out, one thing’s clear: the way we travel has changed, and tourist attractions around the world are adapting more to meet that demand.
Key findings
So, what did our research reveal about the world’s priciest attractions in 2025? Here’s some of the standout stats:
-
One World Observatory in New York has seen the biggest ticket increase post-pandemic, with prices jumping by a whopping 63.3% since 2019.
-
The Tower of London takes the crown for the UK’s steepest ticket price rise, with admission fees rising by 44.7% over the same period.
- Across all 10 attractions analyzed, the average price increase between 2019 and 2025 was 30.7% — well above the global 18% noted by Skift.
These increases reflect not only growing visitor demand but also the changing nature of travel, where experiences are prioritized and premium access is more common than ever.
The top 10 global tourist attractions that have seen the biggest price increase
From towering city views to royal landmarks, these attractions have always drawn in the crowds, but post-pandemic, they’re also drawing higher ticket prices.
We’ve taken a closer look at the top 10 tourist spots that have seen the biggest increase, and why they continue to be bucket list favourites.
1. One World Observatory, New York
- Price increase — 63.3%
- 2019 price — $34.82 | 2025 price — $59
Located at the top of One World Trade Center, this sky-high observatory offers unmatched 360° views of Manhattan and beyond. It’s not just the scenery that draws millions; it’s the storytelling, immersive experiences, and powerful symbolism behind the site.
Post-pandemic, enhanced digital displays, upgraded security measures, and growing demand have contributed to a significant price jump. But for many, the emotional impact and views alone make it worth every cent.
2. Tower of London, London
- Price increase — 44.8%
- 2019 price — £24.73 / $32.15 | 2025 price — £35.80 / $48.29
Steeped in almost 1,000 years of history, the Tower of London is one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks and home to the world-famous Crown Jewels. With visitor numbers rising to almost 3 million in 2024, the continued investment in conservation and exhibitions means it’s no surprise that admission costs have gone up.
Whether you’re walking with Beefeaters or exploring the White Tower, it’s an unforgettable journey through British history, and still one of the capital's top attractions.
3. Casa Batlló, Barcelona
- Price increase — 40.1%
- 2019 price — €24.97 / £21.65 / $28.15 | 2025 price — €35 / £30.34 / $40.93
The striking masterpiece by Antoni Gaudí is unlike anything else in the world — with colorful mosaics, curved architecture, and a rooftop that looks like a dragon’s back. A visit to Casa Batlló is as much an art experience as a sightseeing stop.
Since 2019, new immersive installations, virtual reality guides, and upgraded facilities have been added, helping to justify the price rise. For fans of architecture and design, it’s a must-see when in Barcelona.
4. Buckingham Palace, London
- Price increase — 33.3%
- 2019 price — £24 / $31.00 | 2025 price — £32 / $43.16
As the official residence of the British royal family, Buckingham Palace is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. During select times of the year (usually during the summer months), visitors can explore the lavish State Rooms, stroll through the palace gardens, and take in the grandeur of British tradition.
With the monarchy remaining a major global draw — and upkeep costs for a working palace on the rise — it’s no surprise the entrance fee has crept up. Still, for royal fans and history lovers alike, it’s a quintessential London experience.
5. Top of the Rock, New York
- Price increase — 32.5%
- 2019 price — $39.29 | 2025 price — $52.00
Located at the top of the Rockefeller Center, Top of the Rock offers stunning panoramic views across the Big Apple, including a front-row seat to the Empire State Building. It’s a favorite for photographers and first-time visitors alike, especially around sunset.
Increased demand, enhanced visitor flow systems, and timed ticketing features have contributed to the price hike. But for the unbeatable skyline snaps and iconic NYC moment, many still consider it well worth the climb (and the cost).
6. Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studios, London
- Price increase — 24.3%
- 2019 price — £45.05 / $58.57 | 2025 price — £56.00 / $75.56
For Potterheads around the world, this behind-the-scenes studio tour is pure magic. From Diagon Alley to the Great Hall, the attraction brings the wizarding world to life with original sets, costumes, and props from the films.
Since reopening post-pandemic, the studio has expanded with new exhibits, seasonal events, and interactive features, all contributing to the price increase. Still, despite the added costs, it’s a dream day out for fans and one of the UK’s top family-friendly attractions.
7. Palace of Westminster, London
- Price increase — 21.3%
- 2019 price — £28.04 / $36.46 | 2025 price — £34.00 / $45.87
Home to the UK Parliament, the Palace of Westminster — complete with the iconic Big Ben clock tower — is one of London’s most photographed buildings. Guided tours take visitors through centuries of political history, with a look inside the House of Commons, Westminster Hall, and more.
Recent restoration efforts, security upgrades, and rising operational costs have increased ticket prices. Still, for those curious about UK politics or simply seeking an iconic photo op, it’s a fascinating and worthwhile visit.
8. London Eye, London
- Price increase — 20.7%
- 2019 price — £24.03 / $31.24 | 2025 price — £29.00 / $39.12
The London Eye has become a modern symbol of the city’s skyline — offering sweeping views across the Thames and beyond from its 32 glass capsules. It’s a favorite for tourists, especially first-time visitors to the capital.
Increased popularity, digital experiences like headsets, and improved queue management have helped drive the price up. But with a full rotation offering 30 minutes of breathtaking views, it’s still a high-flying must-do for a reason.
9. Madame Tussauds London, London
- Price increase — 19.8%
- 2019 price — £35.06 / $45.58 | 2025 price — £42.00 / $56.65
From movie stars to world leaders, Madame Tussauds lets you get up close and personal (well, almost) with hyper-realistic wax figures of the rich and famous. It’s a fun, interactive experience that’s especially popular with families.
The post-pandemic version of the attraction included updated zones, new experiences such as creating your own wax hand, and even more celebrity figures — adding to the overall value and the cost. If you want to rub shoulders with the stars and snap a selfie with A-listers, it’s still a must-see.
10. Empire State Building, New York
- Price increase — 6.6%
- 2019 price — $39.79 | 2025 price — $44.00
As one of the most iconic buildings in the world, the Empire State Building has long been a bucket-list stop for NYC tourists. With its art deco design, historical exhibits, and spectacular observation decks, it continues to draw millions of visitors each year.
While its price increase is on the smaller side, it still reflects inflation and ongoing investments in visitor experiences, including new museum-quality exhibits on the building’s history and cultural impact. A timeless view, and still a relatively wallet-friendly option compared to other major observatories.
What tourists can expect from high-cost attractions
So, what are you actually getting for your money when you pay more for entry to the world’s most iconic attractions? In many cases, higher ticket prices come with new features and a few luxury touches.
Premium access and exclusive experiences
Attractions are increasingly offering tiered ticketing, where higher prices unlock extras like skip-the-line entry, private tours, or access to restricted areas.
For travelers looking to make their visit feel extra special (or avoid the queues), these premium perks are often worth the added cost.
Enhanced health and safety measures
Since the pandemic, attractions have stepped up their health protocols — from contactless ticketing and enhanced cleaning to timed entry that controls crowd sizes. While these changes make for a more comfortable visit, they also require more resources, which can factor into ticket prices.
In return, visitors get safer, more organized experiences, especially at busy or enclosed attractions.
The rise of interactive and digital experiences
Gone are the days of static exhibitions and audio guides alone. Many attractions now feature immersive technology, including VR zones, augmented reality, and interactive displays that bring stories to life.
These upgrades offer more engaging and educational experiences, especially for younger visitors or those who want to dive deeper into a location’s history or culture.
New VIP packages
From champagne sunset rides on the London Eye to all-access packages at NYC observatories, VIP experiences are on the rise. These bundles often include fast-track access, exclusive areas, complimentary gifts, and even food and drink add-ons.
They’re designed for travelers celebrating a special occasion, or just booking to make the most of their visit with less stress and a touch of luxury.
How to save on expensive tourist attractions
While some attraction prices have climbed, that doesn’t mean you need to break the bank to enjoy them. With a bit of planning and know-how, there are plenty of ways to see the sights for less.
1. Book in advance for discounts and deals
“Many attractions offer early bird pricing or online-only discounts when you book ahead,” explains Matt. “Not only does this guarantee your spot (especially during busy seasons), but it can also knock a few dollars off the full price.”
Plus, pre-booking often includes time-slot options to help avoid the biggest crowds.
2. Take advantage of multi-attraction passes
“If you’re visiting a city like New York or London, consider a city pass or multi-attraction bundle. These often give you access to several of the top sights at a reduced price — and sometimes include fast-track entry too,” says Matt.
Just be sure to check what’s included and compare individual ticket prices before committing.
3. Visit during off-peak season
Timing is everything. “Ticket prices tend to be lower outside of summer break and peak vacation months, and you’ll also enjoy smaller crowds and shorter queues,” says Matt. “Weekdays are often cheaper than weekends too, especially for indoor attractions.”
If you’ve got flexibility in your schedule, planning your visit midweek or in shoulder seasons can make a big difference to your budget.
4. Use loyalty programs or credit card rewards
“It’s worth checking whether your credit card provider, airline loyalty program, or travel booking site offers rewards or cashback on ticket purchases,” Matt says. “Some cards also provide free travel insurance, priority access, or exclusive discounts on experiences and tours.”
A few clicks could mean big savings, and it all adds up when you’re visiting multiple attractions.
